Target Participants & Requirements:
The Programme is targeted at the following groups of participants:
- Senior Managers/Managers or Senior Supervisors in the retail industry sector with responsibilities or intended responsibilities to drive productivity improvement and/or organizational performance.
- Participants should have significant working experiences in the retail industry with at least 3 years of experiences in managerial or supervisory level.
- Participants with a University Degree, a Polytechnic Diploma or a WSQ Diploma in Retail Management are preferred.
The training programme includes a post-training component where participants are required to initiate productivity related projects in their respective sponsoring companies. Participants should hold significant senior positions that give them the authority and autonomy to implement such projects at the business unit or company level. All applicants must be supported by their employers.
Programme Objectives:
Programme is intended to provide participants with a broad and good conceptual understanding of the fundamentals of “What”, “Why” and “How” of productivity and its management; and how these could be applied at the company level or in the retail industry. The programme will:
- Provide participants with a good understanding of key productivity concepts and its measurement at national, industry and company levels.
- Provide participants with an understanding on the needs and rationales for productivity improvement; the challenges of implementing a productivity improvement project, and the roles of productivity manager as a change agent.
- Provide participants with the knowledge and understanding of the types of tools, techniques, methodologies, systems and processes that may be used to improve productivity at company or industry sectoral level.
- Provide participants with an appreciation and broad understanding of the potential applications of innovation and technology in productivity improvement
- Enable participants to identify and apply the relevant measurements, tools, techniques, methodologies, systems, processes and/or technology to implement sustainable productivity improvement programme(s)
The programme will be delivered in a practical and application based approach. At the end of the programme, participants would have gained a deepened understanding of productivity, and be equipped with the knowledge and skills to be a competent Productivity Manager. Participants are required to complete an approved company based productivity project which will be assessed.

Module 1: Productivity in Perspective
- What is Productivity? Understand the concept and definition of “Productivity”
- Productivity growth and trend in Singapore
- Rationales and needs for productivity improvement
- Common myths or misunderstanding about productivity.
- Productivity measurement at national, industry and company level
- Implementation - selecting or developing a productivity measurement or series of measurements for an organization
Module 2: Productivity Manager as a Change Agent
- Challenges of productivity improvement initiatives
- The key roles of a productivity manager
- Productivity manager as a change agent
- Understanding change management and change management processes
- Identify and understand the critical success factors for a sustainable productivity improvement culture and initiatives in a company.
Module 3: Productivity Improvement Techniques, Systems & Processes
- The concept of continuous improvement as fundamental mindset and strategy for productivity growth and development
- Understanding productivity improvement from an “Input”, “Output” and “Process” system view or perspective
- Understanding the main productivity factors – job related, resource related and environment related
- Developing a productivity improvement conceptual model or process
- The major tools, techniques and processes available, including its advantages and limitations for productivity improvement.
Module 4: Innovation & Technology Applications for Productivity Improvement
- An introduction and scanning of the evolution and types of technology from the 70’s to present and its potential applications for productivity improvement.
- Case discussions on examples of technology applications, including ICT successfully deployed by companies or industry sectors in Singapore and overseas.
- An introduction to innovation and business process innovations.
- Leveraging technology and innovation to drive productivity growth – potential and pitfalls to avoid.
- Identifying and overcoming barriers to technology adoption and innovation to boost productivity.
- Productivity and innovation credit
Module 5: Practicum – Company Based Productivity Project
Participants are required to complete a company based project, which is relevant and useful to his/her sponsoring company. Company’s management approval must be obtained.
